Marker Charging

I have discussed about this topic on our basic obediene segment but if you are not the one who visited that segment can consider this one, as both are same.

Marker Charging / Charging the Marker is the first step of Marker Training, without this you can’t go any further. Before you start training a dog using markers you have to be 110% sure that the dog knows what “MARKER” it is. It takes a very little time for a dog/ puppy to understand the marker as a positive noise (“YES” is the positive marker).  Once the dog is associated with the noise (voice marker or clicker) and look towards you for reward every time you mark, then you are ready to use this positive marker to teach behaviors.

CHARGE MARKER: Before you start charging the marker make sure you have bait /treat bag tied to your waist with some high value treats in it (not a regular feeding kibble). All you need to do is say “Yes” or click the “Clicker” and give the dog a treat from your treat bag, use both of your hands to deliver the reward. Do not give any commands neither do expect any behavior from your dog during this just Mark (YES/CLICK) and reward with a happy voice. When you will do this for one or two days (dividing in a session which should not be longer than 5 to 7 minutes at a time, you can do as many session as you want in a day but keep it short like 5 minutes) the dog will start to react with that sound of “Yes” and will look towards you to gets its treat. When it’s done and the dog looks towards you every time you say “YES”, then you are done with first part and can start teaching behavior. If you still have queries then visit the section given below ”Ask A Question”  on our website and I will try to answer as soon as possible.

Here in this video you will see I am charging the marker with the word "YES". I do not give any commands like sit, stand or come:
