Puppy & Breed Selection
Marker Training Foundations
Hello Mr.Asit I live in kolkata & looking for a good certified trainer for my GSD puppy 4 months age but motivational training not forceful method. I have talked with few local trainers but they seem to have very poor knowledge & their methods are forceful. So I will be grateful if you can help me finding one or may be if you can come down by your self. Love your website.

Hello Sandipa

First of all I am sorry to say that I would not be able to come for any new training till October 2016 as all of my classes are booked by now and nor can I suggest you any trainer from Kolkata. I do know many dog trainers in Kolkata but their training methods are completely different from mine. They don’t even know what pack structure is and why its so important before any formal training. Few trainers use force & few claim that they use Cesar Millan’s techniques. Well let me explain the last one first. If you are a pet owner then you must have heard about Cesar Millan. He lives in Santa Clarita, California, U.S.A. & he is a dog rehabilator. I believe that he is a real dog whisper. What Cesar Millan does with dogs is called “ALFA ROLE” which is okay when he does it by him self but when I see any pet owner or any new trainer doing or trying the same thing it scares hell out me. ALFA ROLE is something to determine being the dominant one between you and your dog which is an extremely dangerous thing to perform especially if you have the hard breeds like Rotts, Dobs, and GSDs etc. I have read lot of information on the internet about ALFA ROLES where the pet owners got bitten badly by their own dogs. Cesar has years of experience with some god gifted psychology about dogs and he knows how to calmly manage the worst situation, if it occurs. Not every one can become Cesar Millan in overnight; neither all have the same god gifted inborn psychology like him. I like his TV shows so much and have seen almost all of his episodes which I have still stored in my video gallery but I would never try his techniques myself to train a dog. Few things you can follow what he advices are being calm, consistent & firm but not bullies. When it comes to giving corrections to your dog always use collar & leashes which are specially designed for training purposes. Never correct your dog by hitting or stroking with hands or the way Cesar Millan shows. If you are calm & consistent along with few set of rules then you will eventually become the leader of your dog. But using a scary way of training could ruin your dog’s temperament for rest of its life. So avoid the trainer who claims they use Cesar’s way. Now talking about the forceful trainers, well forceful training is very old school training process which has been in use for a long time in many places and it does work. But if you are interested to train a competition dog with high drive which is far more self animated & beautiful than any compulsive (forceful) training, then you should go with the Motivational/Marker training. I will always recommend Marker Training coz it’s a non-confrontational way to train any breed of dogs. So you must determine which one you want before you choose a dog trainer for your dog/puppy. Some times a good dog becomes a shaky or a ill-tempered dog for rest of its life if trained or treated in wrong ways. Hope it was helpful.

Best Regards,

Asit Bhattacharya
